Nobody looks forward to spending money on “grown-up” things, like oil changes, having your gutters cleaned, or replacing window treatments. Unfortunately, it’s just a fact of life. No matter how you feel about your current window treatments, we’ve put together a list of signs that it’s time to go out with the old, and in with the new.

They’re Broken

This may not be as obvious as it seems. Broken doesn’t have to mean missing slats or shades that won’t roll back up. Your window treatments may be broken if you need to put forth extra force when opening or lifting them. You can consider repair but repairing any mechanisms in older window treatments is difficult, and therefore, costly.

They’re Damaged

Damage is not the same thing as broken. Your window treatments are damaged if your fabric coverings are stained, faded, or discolored. Sometimes you can spot clean a stain but for some damage, such as a tear, there is no cleaning that can repair that. Think of it this way, if you wouldn’t wear something with a stain or tear, why would you have it outfitting your windows?

They’re Outdated

Perhaps your blinds were on-trend when you purchased your home, but they’ve faded out of style. Window treatments tend to have a “lifespan” of around 5-7 years. If yours are outdated they can mar the look of the entire room. You can easily give the whole room a facelift by updating your window coverings. This is much easier than redecorating an entire room.

Your Energy Costs are Increasing

Only in recent years have consumers, and manufacturers, become more aware of conserving resources wherever possible. If you notice your energy bills have been increasing, it’s time to check the functionality of your window treatments. Cellular shades are a great choice for updating. They’re stylish and provide an excellent layer of insulation.

They’re in Disrepair

Should you notice your window blinds have slats that are warped, bent, or broken it’s time to say “goodbye”. If the damage is on natural hardwood, humidity is the likely culprit, and you should consider switching to faux wood. If the broken blinds are faux wood, it is likely to heat damage, and you should opt for a UV- blocking solar shade

They No Longer Meet Your Needs

Are your window coverings providing you with the privacy you need? Do they help maintain a comfortable temperature in your room? Do you experience glares on TV screens even when the coverings are closed or lowered? If you can’t answer these questions positively, your window treatments are no longer doing their job.

You’ve Purchased New Windows

Recently installed windows likely won’t be a perfect fit for your current window treatments. Even if they are, what better time to get new ones than when you’ve purchased new windows. You can improve the look of your home, both inside, and for those who view it from outdoors with new window coverings.
